Oh lord almighty, give me strength…
Yeah, the game had some clever things in it. Including the original “note” you dipped in water to reveal a secret code. (Which they cleverly recreated by a tiny animated GIF in the VC version.) Surprisingly, many gamers got stumped by that, or lost said tangible letter, so Nintendo Power’s hotline had alot of calls about that.
Andrew Dickman (a popular DeviantArt & GuyWithGlasses.com artist/cartoonist, and self-proclaimed video game/animation critic) I recall put Mike Jones (the hero of Star Tropics) on his top 9 stupid video game character list for the sole reason that Mike Jones was “boring,” (though, it looks like he edited the image description taking out the “reasons” why hates these characters) which is kinda odd, sense AWD likes other silent-protagonist video game characters that have even less personality then Mike did, and such.
Though, I kinda stopped taking his opinions/criticisms seriously, when he said he should’ve put Banjo Kazooie on the list to… (Granted, not many liked “Nuts & Bolts.”)
Wasn’t the original Japanese version even called something like “Top Secret: The Resurrection of Hitler?” That kinda makes the censorship even a bit funnier. (Kinda odd they would censor killing nutzis in the first place, they’re not very well-liked group of people anyways.)
Oh yeah, I actually have “Star Tropics” on my Wii (via Virtual Console) and it is tough, but a very good game regardless. Surprisingly, the “Star Tropics” games are some of the few Nintendo-made games that NEVER got a Japanese release, (which include a few old Gameboy games) and made exclusively for western markets.
(Oddly, I noticed they still had Japanese “Kappa” creatures in the game regardless, something unfamiliar to Americans at the time.)
Also even the ones that looked like they would be fun adventures for kids had some ‘tough content’ Did you ever play StarTropics?
I think I was to young to even read when those came out, so can’t say I have read them.
Regardless of NOA’s (Nintendo of America) censorship policies at the time, some NES games did get away with some edgy or even rather creepy/violent things in them. “Monster Party” was loaded with blood, and disturbing images, and let’s not forget Bionic Commando’s famous ending featuring a surprisingly graphic exploding Hitler head.
(Hitler was the villain, though ironically they gave him, and his organization a different name for the USA version, but it was still obviously him.)
You ever read the Nintendo game novels, speaking of which? The Metal Gear one got the story pretty much entirely wrong (it was clear dude never played it) but if it were a modern movie it would definitely hold an R. Blaster Master would also get at least a PG for ‘intense themes’ but in 80s ratings it’d only get a soft G.
Y’know, for once I’d have to agree with you. ;) They did bring back “Garbage Pail Kids” cards for awhile, I recall.
It’s amazing all the edgy things they got away with back then… (Especially in kid stuff.) Heck the second 1988 issue of Nintendo Power magazine featured severed heads, and an actual cow heart on the cover. (The famous “Castlevania 2” nightmare-fuel cover.)
I actually watched that as a kid, but mostly for Gilbert Gottfried.
Though, I think the “Problem Child” movies were only PG-rated. Still, I suppose Junior wasn’t the “best role-model,” and said movies got away with some things. (I hear “Problem Child 2” was the first movie to have a major barfing scene, and NOT get an R-rating.)
Though, I liked those movies as a kid, (don’t judge me) and I never imitated said behavior, of course. (I was a good kid.) Though, if they made those movies nowadays, parents’ groups, soccer-moms, and such would go nuts, I imagine.
Even USA Network got in on the act, making a frickin’ PROBLEM CHILD cartoon.
…Come to think of it the cartoon version looks a heck of a lot like Willy Beamish.
My god did they completely miss the audience on the cartoon though. They made him all ‘radikal’ and friends with everyone like Kick Buttowski, only not as stupid and bean-like.
lol I hated Barney as a ’90s kid personally.
They also made a “Police Academy,” “Robocop,” and “Toxic Advenger” cartoon series, ALL aimed at kids, and all 3 movies were R-rated to.
Also the 80s were just crazy about the whole ‘kids are smarter than they look and will ‘get’ these random r-rated movies brought down for them’ thing. Damned shame the world went completely topsy-turvy since then. Hell, remember that they made a Rambo ’toon?
@Niggoslav_Krawczyk
Maybe also so the kids could have a reference they’d understand. Most kids wouldn’t of gotten the ‘80s references in the “Shining Armor & Cadance” flashback arc.
Still, before people complain about that, as a kid I recall many cartoons in my childhood referencing things to, (like TMNT having a cop character in one ep’ who acted/sounded like Barnie Fife/Don Knots from “Andy Griffoth,” a show I never saw as a kid, and was “before my generation”) but I still enjoyed them, and came to appreciate them more when I got older, or found out where said reference came from. I never saw “Godfather” as a kid, (a rated-R movie) but I still thought it was funny they referenced it in Heathcliff, and such.
So honestly, I don’t mind the refs, as long as they don’t go to overboard with them. (I like the subtle background gags personally though.)
…
Are the Nightmare forces the remnants of humanity..?
Mind=Blown
maybe due to the amount of MLP fans also into GF for some reason? I see it come up semi-often on /mlp/
Why did the writers had to choose Mabel?
that one is RD, i am sure, i saw a big scan when the whole comic was leaked three weeks ago.
Mabel is sad because she made Rarity’s sad, even if is just a nightmare.
