T’be blunt… No.
It originated a couple years back as a ‘Bone Apple Teeth’ comedy video. The dialogue was so unhinged it couldn’t be anything but a gag. And it was a small niche running joke.
Until a couple news channels dug up the video recently and went “Ugh the INTERNET GENERATION are doing a stupid thing again! Look at this stupid thing they’re doing! This is why the Internet is stupid and you’re smart for not using computers.”
And then it became a Stupid Thing instead of an in-joke.
The same thing happened with the ‘Tide Pods Candy’ thing. It wasn’t a poisoning hazard, just a bunch of people going ‘ha ha they look like candy’ and the news lost their collective minds. Because nobody watches news if they say ‘everything’s fine today!’, they only get ratings if they have a NEW TERRIBLE THING HAPPENING NOW to keep you watching advertisements. Because their customers aren’t you. Your eyeballs and attention are the product being sold to advertisers.
MatPat did a video on all this a few weeks ago.

Thank the heavens there are still people that discourage, or just plain don’t do it. But, it’s the thought that counts. Who’s so sick and demented to even come up with things like this?! Or is the youth so damn bored, that the thrill of almost killing yourselves is so exciting?
