Before her time as a teacher in the school of friendship, Sweetie Belle helped her sister Rarity run her boutique in Ponyville. Growing tired of constantly shifting around the same objects day after day, she took to creating her own short-range portal spell to help with the process. The spell was simple, yet unique. Her creative efforts caught the attention of quite a few unicorn scholars, including the late Starswirl the Bearded. During their meeting, he briefly touched on how the spell could possibly be used for self-defense. Sweetie Belle thought the idea was ridiculous.
