And you just know that one of these cops will leak pictures of that rifle so their pastor can denounce the ‘tranorrist’ agenda. Because we know from Candy that this society isn’t by default LGBT friendly.

If you stay and fight you either die a pointless death as a martyr or end up in prison for a very long time. And all they achieve is giving the cops more “evidence” that they are behind the attack. Because now the cops can point at their guns and tell everyone “See these people were dangerous but we took them out before they could do any more harm.”
Atom has the smartest idea. Get out of dodged before the cops arrive and live to fight another day. Better on the run than in prison or death.
“Defending yourself doesn’t make you the bad guy (regardless of whether or not you did anything).”
The law (and common sense disagree) if I’m a drug dealer, kidnapper or terrorist defending myself against police raid I’m still the bad guy and rightfully get sentenced for (attempted) murder. I would even go as far as and assume that most people who are trying to use violence against cops in RL are bad guys or assholes.

I wouldn’t care if it was a no-win scenario. In a dystopia like this, your odds in the legal system are stacked against you. We saw that with Atom’s time in prison and the cops trying to bait her into reoffending. If I were in their place, I would take the million to one odds of escaping a shoot out over the certainty that I would be thrown into the meat grinder of a prison system. Defending yourself doesn’t make you the bad guy (regardless of whether or not you did anything). Again, there are plenty of real world scenarios where this has happened.

Getting into a shoot-out with the cops is a no-win scenario. They have more people and more equipment and it makes you look like the bad guy. And to be fair, we don’t even know if this is the corrupt dystopian cops being corrupt dystopian cops or if they have a legit reason to storm this place. We don’t know who’s behind the bombing (probably an evil dystopian cooperation for some evil dystopian cooperation reasons) but who says it wasn’t these guys? I mean even Atom wonders whether or not they were involved.

Just means you know how unpopular you or your views are. You also know that you won’t get a fair trial or one at all. Just because you are ready to defend yourself, your family, or your beliefs doesn’t make you a criminal. History is full of examples of people who were in this exact same situation.
