I think that there was a good reason for that change. Having, on average, smaller eyes in neutral expressions puts a bigger emphasis on the times when pupils are supposed to dilate (get larger), to emphasize the emotions.

I feel like that slight stylistic change has a very tiny impact on how cute and adorable characters are. In any case, I didn’t expect it to feel so impactful for someone to result in a need to edit original screencaps. :)

Seasons do have stylistic differences, I often attribute it to the different storyboarders and the style of the show naturally changing. I’ve looked at storyboards for later season, they tend to utilize smaller irises/pupils even in neutral expressions, and it is reflected in the final too
Despite using rigs, many stylistic differences do exist
This doesn’t make any era inherently better or worse. Just different, and I personally have a preference for one over the other

As for the saturation, it depends on the video source. They didn’t really change anything when producing the show.

their eyes arent allowed to be big and cute anymore- a lot of idle expressions are usually really small irises, oddly
it’s nothing against the show itself, i just lost interest along the way, and these are only some of the reasons why ^^;

The saturation bump is noticeable, and good.
But the smaller eyes/irises, well… it’s just not that noticeable. I watched this GIF for a couple minutes and can see the differences, but it’s not a big enough difference for me to care.
Did this really keep you from enjoying the later seasons of the show?

Basically anything broadcast in the United States also needs to be color-corrected to be “broadcast-safe” – i.e. you can’t have overly-saturated colors since really bright whites and dark blacks would cause compression artifacting in a digital broadcast, and would even start to screw with an analog broadcast (bright whites distort audio, dark blacks roll the picture).

I think so too. I’ve always noticed early screencaps of episodes ripped from people’s TVs and streams are always a lot more saturated than the screencaps from official releases.

The season 9 shorts from Youtube are also really desaturated compared to the show.

Could also be the tv’s color settings that may make colors look a little different.
