Rocky isn’t a central character, so that fact really doesn’t say much. A more interesting fact would be, say, the first time Izzy and Sunny met each other (which, of course, was during the first quarter of the ‘a New Generation’ film, shortly after Sunny was kicked out of Phyllis’s factory)
Do you mean to imply that colts aren’t raised as part of the royal family?
Yeah, you’re right about that. I honestly don’t know why those things weren’t considered here. I am sure they know just as much about animation as you do, considering it is their profession (and I don’t know if you are an animator yourself, or just an enthusiast). So I would think that they would know about composition and framing, and if I am not mistaken those two things, along with motion, were used in other scenes in the special.
Its not the dash that he does from one side to the other that catches people’s attention. Its when he whips out the brush. In 2d, if there’s an effect we can’t pull off right, we do it off screen. This scene could’ve been fixed just by paning the camera in on Zipp as the guy pulls out his brush (off screen) then panned back out with the guy’s brush already out.
Yeah, same here. It almost looks like they were trying to go for the more comical effect that you get with 2D animation (IE the movements of the Road Runner from Looney Tunes). I think it could be improved simply by adding a blur effect to the movements, which helps to make it look less jerky while keeping animations simple.
Only one scene really got me in the special. It was when Posey was complaining outside the sheriff’s office. Felt kinda unnecessary the way she was animated. This one at least makes sense. I could see in 2d he’d be ‘zipping’ (hehe!) Back and forth.
Back in my day, we called that tweening. I don’t think it applies for cgi because they deal with frame rates.
Yeah, you have a good point there. When you do anything for the first time, generally speaking you aren’t the best at it. Over time you improve. And for that reason I could see S2 having better animation than this special, and there may even be some S1 episodes that stand out. It will be interesting to see how that turns out.
To be fair I don’t exactly recall friendship is magic having its best animation magic when it started out.
It’s a practice makes perfect type thing
