Sonic’s fanbase is pretty big, hell it was half world-wide in the 90’s.  
QUALITY and UNITY of the fandom is a totally different story.

Top speed… I don’t recall any reliable numbers for either. Combat is Sonic all the way.
 
Better? Despite the fluctuating quality of his games, Sonic has been around and visible for better than twenty years. On the other limb, Rainbow is part of the main cast of a show that managed to get a larger fandom in a year than Sonic has ever had.
 
Even if she can’t claim sole responsibility, she seems to win as a character.
 
If you meant better abilities, Rainbow’s flight and weather manipulation are nice for versatility, but Sonic knows how to do some impressive stuff with his speed and his chaos control is damn cool, too.

I liked “Sonic Heroes” personally.
