Personally, if I were to defend myself with an edged weapon, I would want a pair of dirks. Long enough, good for both stabbing and slashing, but short and sturdy enough to be usable defensively.
 
A moderately sized shield and a hefty mace would be even better, though. You don’t need much experience to use them effectively.

It’s about body motion and playing it off the sword. I use it’s weight to move me, like a counter weight. You have to be careful though as not to throw yourself off balance.

You’d be surprised how fast you can move with a heavy weapon. Armor slows you down more then your weapon does, once you learn to handle it. After awhile it becomes an extension of yourself.

point taken. but sometimes it’s just how the user moves that factors in to. I tend to be light on my feet. so I’m comfortable with most knives. though I doubt I’d like a heavy Claymore
