I think the reason why many bronies take Hitch as a top husbando is he’s such a lovely sweet breath of wholesome, well-formed fresh air in a world where male MCs are depicted and treated like crap.

Yeah, and I think Chrysalis is a good example too, as someone who denied redemption so she could keep seeking being a controlling, love-sucking queen.
(Ooooh, that would definitely explain a lot—As much as I love Cozy Glow how she is, A LOT doesn’t make sense about her character and actions. Being like Babydoll from Batman would work very well for her)

I didn’t know until I randomly stumbled upon the first vid, and I AWWWW’d out loud when I did! James Marsden really was a perfect fit. So much so that I think Hasbro specifically called him to audition for the movie, to have Donut Lord himself play Hitch 😆 We’re all very happy that he agreed to do so~!

If I had Hitch as a friend, I wouldn’t want him to leave in defeat either 💛

True, though I think he did indeed die. Sombra to me is what happens when a pony actually does become evil, he along with Cozy Glow were meant to show that even ponies can be so power hungry and cruel that they refuse to change because they love the way they are.(And I’m still convinced that Cozy was not a filly but a mare with a disorder like Babydoll from Batman, which makes it a bit more tragic but back on topic)

Oh! I didn’t know that! Well that explains why animals love him so much, he’s nurturing and kind. He really is like a male Fluttershy, James Marsden was a perfect voice for him, not only for his incredible singing voice (see Hairspray and Enchanted to see what I mean) but also the fact that he played a sheriff who loved animals in Sonic The Hedgehog. Great casting!

And he has a calendar dedicated to him, plus all the ponies in Maretime Bay really do trust him, he is super OP! And I can see why Sunny cares for him, and why she didn’t want him to leave when he suggested he should return to Maretime Bay.

Oh and let’s not forget, his quick thinking :) “Magic, wing, feather, MAYONNAIES!!”

Well, that is true. I kinda hope Sombra doesn’t come back—I mean, geesh, then he’d have TWO fake out deaths—but if he does, the idea of him making Sunny doubt her father´s teachings is very interesting!

That´s such a cute idea 😍 Though, in two books based on the movie, it´s confirmed that his critter magnetism comes from the fact that the critters feel like Hitch will protect them, sensing how nurturing he is 💕

I don´t blame him for being jealous. Hitch is attractive enough to sell calendars, everypony loves him, he PAID OFF HIS MORTGAGE!! Hitch is OP 😞😞

Very true, but to her defense, Sunny never faced a Pegasi or Unicorn bully in her childhood like Judy did (she had her own issues thanks to having a fox bully, who scared her face when they were young, that can create ptsd) Sunny never saw another type of pony until Izzy and she was a pleasant meet. I do think that perhaps in the series she will have some prejudice to get over, possibly if she does indeed meet King Sombra. If the toy line really did spoil it, she will learn that Ponies did indeed use magic against one another and this particular unicorn was so hated in the ancient days due to his mind control, dark magic and enslavement of ponies (and possibly other creatures to) he is the only villain I can see returning from G4, due to him being the embodiment of darkness (he was described once as the Sauron of the MLP universe)

Yeah! I agree, I think that’s why critters gravitate to him so much, because in his youth and beyond he always loved and cared for animals similar to Fluttershy, I can tell he would not approve of animal mistreatment. And his critter magnetism rewards him with Cloudpuff returning his lost badge.

There hoof-shake again was very cute I remember the lines, “Up high, down low, Hitch it to a post. Flip it Sunny side up and on a piece of toast. (Nuzzle) and that scene where they smile at each other, I think you are right proves that his parents were more open minded than Phyllis.

Your right the two make great foils for eachother. And I loved the scene where Sprout whines when Hitch leaves.

Good comparisons!! Though, from what I understand of Zootopia (even if I have yet to see it), Judy got her prejudices more explored than Sunny and Izzy’s. Would be interesting to see them still struggle with these prejudices in the upcoming series, as earth ponies, unicorns, and pegasi learn to live in harmony.

True!! There’s like, one tiny scene where he shakes off a flying rat from hugging his leg, but that’s still more gentle than how I see people my age treat animals that approach them, those that aren’t dogs or cats :’’) Hitch would NOT approve of ponies/people that needlessly scare off birds. I like to think that even before he embraces his critter magnetism, he gets just as protective over animals being mistreated as Fluttershy does.

Yeees, Hitch and Sunny’s friendship is precious! I love how loyal Hitch is towards her!! ♥ Even when he probably faced judgement from the town; he mentions that he’s the only real friend she has left, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Sunny was horribly shunned for her activism.

Could be, though I wouldn’t be surprised if he had those qualities beforehand. He’s definitely all Hitch is not, though as foils they have similarities; their involvement in law enforcement, their concern for Maretime Bay’s safety, their own egos, that sort of thing. It’s just that, well, Sprout is far more misguided and selfish than Hitch, in every one of these things.
Because of how they’re meant to be foils I wanna imagine that Hitch’s potential parents could be foils to Phyllis too!! Parents that are open-minded despite their general mistrust, parents that let Hitch befriend who he wants, parents that show Hitch independence, that sort of thing.

I agree with all your points. Two Disney characters I would compare Sunny and Hitch to are Judy Hopps from Zootopia and Flynn Rider(Eugene) from Tangled. Sunny is optimistic, caring and sees the best of people and wants them to be judged on their characteristics not their species, but still has misconceptions and fears, just because she accepts Unicorns and Pegasi as friends doesn’t mean she wasn’t feed the same information as the others, despite her dad’s teachings. She still thought Unicorns fry brains. Heck, even Izzy was afraid of Pegasi and thought Earth Ponies smelled like fish and were dumb, but that changed once they got to know each other.

Hitch is not the element of kindness for nothing, even when he is annoyed by the critters, he never does anything mean to them and at the most, politely asks them to give him space. And your right, Hitch despite being a colt, was more than willing to play the game Sunny’s way rather than instantly siding with Sprout. And as they got older, Hitch remained her friend and still for the most part put that friendship above his job as sheriff “I’m asking you as your friend, not as sheriff.”. Also there Hoof shake was very sweet.

Sprout I believe inherited all of pre-production Hitch’s worst qualities. Making him the insecure character, he is basically everything Hitch is not, insecure, full of himself, whiny, a mommy’s boy, authoritarian, and wants all games played his way.

Though you can tell that Phyllis was the one who kept filling his head with hate, and like a prejudice parent stopped him from participating in anything that involved Sunny or her dad.

While it’s been joked about, I theorize that playdate was the last time Sprout played with Sunny, heck his mom wouldn’t even let him have a unicorn cupcake.

Sprout is the opposite side of the coin.

Yeah, I saw the original Fit Right In animatic…Hitch would’ve had a full-on HATEDOM if he acted like he did in that. Like, Pipp is hated by some for faaaar less. Also Twitter would’ve been offended of a ‘guy hates wearing a dress’ joke.

Hitch has his own prejudices to work through in the movie, outside of that line; calling Zipp, Izzy and Pipp enemies when they hadn’t done anything wrong, the “I wish I could say it was nice to meet you, but it wasn’t!” line, even lowkey emotionally manipulating Sunny by saying that he’d stop being her friend if she kept up her activism. None of it is really his fault obviously, he was raised in a systematically racist system. Honestly, I love how the movie criticizes his world-view while making it consistently clear that he’s a good guy that just wants the best for others. The critter magnetism and the connection to the Element of Kindness makes it 100% clear. His negative traits from the original concepts were toned down, and I think Hitch basically turned out perfect for it ♥ And as the only male character, with the only white voice actor in the main cast, AND as a cop, that’s saying something…Other writers would’ve full-on vilified him.

Sprout is more like the insecure male who won’t stand any girliness ajkdsfbsdgbkdjg. Outside of him wanting his playdates with Sunny and Hitch to be “accurate”, you can tell that he also ways to play with the dolls in a guy’s way. With fights and lazers and violence!! Friendship is boooooring and girly >:(( Then there’s Hitch who just wants all his friends to be happy, and he grows into being just as respecting of femininity as a stallion. Really shows how they’re meant to be foils.

Exactly, I’ve seen the behind the scene works, and they rework things that don’t work, originally Hitch was too arrogant and a bit more prejudice and thus was put in a dress, but the filmmakers realized this would backfire and didn’t match what they wanted for a Mane 5 character, so they reworked it and his personality making him far more likable, and the only prejudice thing he says in the movie is “I know Unicorns like shinny things!” which may actually be true…

But I agree, I love how Hitch is a masculine character but is not afraid to show his feminine side, he’s not some insecure male who thinks he has to fight for his manhood and be reviled by the slightly hint of pink. This is why Hitch is loved, and why so many think he is a distant descendant of Fluttershy.

Yeah, I think Hitch is FAR too mature for that kind of attitude, and will be a good example of how male protagonists in kid’s shows aren’t afraid to be girly anymore. And he’s masculine without rejecting femininity.
