Let’s also note the fact that many bean mouth animated cartoons do have some lazy writing, inb4 someone mentions that some other cartoons that don’t use the bean mouths also have lazy writing:
Tell me an old cartoon that didn’t use the bean mouth and had much if not all of their dialogue be filled with jokes at least every 2 seconds/minutes
(Comedies don’t count)

Wasn’t talking about anime there. Have you seen American cartoons in the 80s? What was the actual difference between GI Joe and He-Man? Maybe it was because that style was…popular back then?
No, no, there actually is a big visual difference between GI Joe and He-Man. I watched a bunch of He-Man and She-Ra episodes and I noticed immediately how it looked different from its 80s contemporaries.
Aside from the fact that they were animated by different studios(Toei for GI Joe and Filmation for He-Man), there’s the way the characters animated and the scene composition. He-Man used a lot of wide shots from the front, reused a lot of animation cycles, used rotoscoping that sometimes looked out of place, never went into more dynamic camera angles.

Yeah, I noticed that when Rarity’s eyelashes disappeared in one of the Season 2 fim eps. and when they attached Celestia’s tail to her butt. XD.
Anyway, now that Flash is dead, the animators have most likely moved over to the Unity programs or whatever other animating programs that they use now.

Flash animation is dead now remember? Abobe, the company who created Flash decided to kill off all of their Flash programs on-line right after fim ended. I read about it on-line one year ago. Hasbro got lucky and got their fim TV series finished just in time before that happened.
Flash no longer exists anymore.

because said mouth shape is boring as fuck, especially when its used in various cartoons where the characters all have the same personality and lazy ass writing
(Pony Life, TTG for examples, and yes I`m aware its also used in some cartoons where thats not always the case)

@William Flutter
Dude, G4 used FLASH to animate and all the characters looked the same; that’s about as cheap as you can get.
You’re still fuming over a mouth shape.

What I find hilarious about the people who are losing their minds over this, is they are showing themselves to be very shallow people since all they can see is an artstyle and know nothing more to judge something as bad.
often citing other shows with a similar artstyle and ignoring the actual quality of the shows, only caring about appearances and nothing more.
it all just comes off as extremely surface level, imagine if we judged G4 by how simple it all was, in terms of artstyle, I mean everyone had the exact same body type till much later in the show, just a different color eyes and manes were all that was different which comes off as rather lazy since its just copy and paste. Was a good thing we judged the show off the characters and stories and not the surface level stuff.

You’re getting ruffled by a mouth shape. Keep that in mind.

You actually can tell the difference for anime my guy
Its still an issue when many other types of western animation exists, its just lazy as shit, especially when more kids are still watching various anime, which still have many other unique art styles while looking similar
(something you can`t really do with the CalArts/Bean mouth shit)

@William Flutter
Yes, they all look the same. You can take young Goku’s head and put it on Ash’s body and no one would notice.
The CalArts issue is that its overabundant
“CALarts style” is not a real thing and almost everyone who fronted the shows displayed here never set foot in CALarts in the first place. The fact that anyone even knows about that dis in the first place is because of John K., who the Internet decided was the be all, end all voice of animated comedy based on creating Ren and Stimpy and then being shit canned after barely eking out two seasons because he was a pain in the ass to work with and couldn’t make a deadline to save his life. Then he coasted on just that for a decade while grooming and gaslighting girls one third his age. Gee, what a guy.
All this over a few one-minute-long shorts in a few months on YouTube while the 3D series is still going to be on Netflix. Who cares if the YouTube-style is aesthetically pleasing to kids—their audeince. What about us?~
Oh, the inhumanity!

  1. There’s no such thing as “CalArts.”
  2. Actually a whole crapload of anime “all look the same” to a lot of people, even different series. To some it’s all “big eyes, small mouth.” You can go on and on about the different studio’s styles but it won’t get through, just like someone explaining that Steven Universe is not the same as Star Vs. is not going to get through to something claiming “CalArts” is all the same.
Just because a lot of shows use “bean mouth” doesn’t mean they’re all same style. The header image EQD put up the other day shows off a lot of stylistic variation. If all you see in that picture is stuff that looks the same, realize that to a lot of people anime is just as samey-samey and boring.

By lazy as hell, I meant they don`t all look the same, sometimes even within the same series, like Pokemon
The CalArts issue is that its overabundant, yes its simple, but when people see it more often from Western animation, its boring as all hell
