That seems to be a recurring problem with certain stories, and not just for MLP. It’s clear what the lesson they want to teach is, but in order to reach that point, they make the characters act in ways we feel they ought to know better than to by this point, almost to the point of an Idiot Plot, if not strictly so.

Agreed. It could’ve been a good episode if it had been handled better.
It had a good moral, but it was presented the wrong way.

Seriously though this episode also ruined the emotional impact of Pinkamena Diane Pie. Reason to get your mane straighten and become depressed: thinking your friends abandon you and never like you anymore? Nah, I can’t play an instrument anymore, that’s what really makes me sad. Screw my friends, I’m gonna guilt-trip them into allowing me to ruin their lives!

This is part of what makes this episode frustrating. Pinkie’s inexplicable obsession with her yovidaphone and her general inability to read the room prevents her from seeing the aggravation she causes by choosing the worst possible times to play. She never means any harm, but she has a difficult time understanding the consequences of her actions until it’s too late.
Of course, the rest of the Mane 6 are little better. They discuss the problems Pinkie has been causing, and yet, when they decide to confront her about it, Twilight merely simplifies it as ‘you’re not good at the yovidaphone and never will be, so please stop playing’. It just feels like they didn’t trust Pinkie to understand if they told her the honest truth.
