Guest Author’s Note: “Magic items in D&D are such a wonderful source of inspiration and fun. The crew in Dungeons and Dragons the Series got a fairly good set, though I don’t think any directly translate to an item in game except for Sheila’s. Still, they provided a nice, obvious way for the crew to interact in the game world in ways that allow them to skip the step of “figuring out/explaining how the world affects your own abilities,” which if done poorly really bogs down the pacing of a series.
I personally like to give some magical items of varying quality to my players as soon as possible, but I’ll admit that after that initial first step, I sometimes find it hard to work in more opportunities for them. It might be that I’ve heard a few too many stories about how even a fun “weak” item like “Whistle of Summoning Pig” can result in balance problems long term.
So, what magical items have given you the most stories? Alternatively, what sort of magical items did you get for the holidays, if you celebrate? (I ended up with a complete set of Bluebeard’s Bride and MASKS, so I’m personally very excited about my RPG potential next year.)”
Transcript:
DM: Okay. So, you’ve yelled at Tiamat.
Tiamat: PUNY WHELP! I’LL TURN YOU TO ASH!
Fluttershy: Eep!
Pinkie Pie: Ooo, fancy voice, Spike!
Rarity: It would seem diplomacy is off the table. Would it be possible to push Tiamat into the chasm?
DM: She can fly, so it wouldn’t quite work. You could trap her in a nearby cave. But first…
DM: Tiamat unleashes her multi-elemental breath at Bobby!
Twilight Sparkle: I shoot an arrow to distract her!
roll
Twilight Sparkle: 13?
DM: It doesn’t hit Tiamat, but it does knock Bobby out of the way.
Fluttershy: Thank you!
Rarity: Hey, you tacky, awful, over-sized scoundrel! Why don’t you crawl back into the hole you came out of!
Tiamat: LITTLE FOOL! YOU DARE INSULT ME?
DM: What’s your next move, Sheila?
Rarity: I’m going to use my greatest weapon, Spike.
Rarity: Fashion!
