MLP seems to be like any other show with a fanbase that the creators interact with– the creator will use and pay homage the ideas that they like, and make fun of / tease the ones that they don’t plan on using.
 
Example of the former: Octavia’s name, Doctor Whooves / Time Trotter’s “Timey Wimey” reference, fan nicknames in general
 
Example of the latter: “Lyra and Golden Harvest are PFFs! They go everywhere together, and love sharing bonbons in the park.”
 
Also, Luna being THE QUEEN OF CAPSLOCK instead of a shy little woobie.
