Spasms in mid-sleep, especially if shortness of breath accompanies it, can be a sign of sleep apnea. There is also a sleeping disorder that can trigger violent seizure like responses before or during REM sleep. I would suggest getting a sleep study done at your local clinic.

That actually happens to be often now that I’m 30 years old, I really should look into it.
You lay down to bed after getting home from work, I work the evening shift until 830pm I’m usually trying to get to sleep between 10 and 11pm.
After being in bed and slowly getting to sleep suddenly I gasp and half of my body jerks around. It’s really annoying and strange. Maybe my brain does think I’m about to die.
I do work in Las Vegas. Dangerous city…
