Hmm, maybe if an artist has an account here then we could associate that account with that artists work. Then the artist could opt to have all his work made visible to “friends” only.
 
Hmm, it would be complex to implement and would have downsides but maybe it would mean less DNPs. (Though associating artists with accounts would have other possibilities)

@Ebalosus has a point; a friending system might break down users into groups where a group will friend each other but might not friend anyone who wasn’t previously in their group.

That would be useful, instead of me keeping a bazillion tabs open and checking them every so often to see if anyone else commented.
 
Anyway, back to the topic at had: Wouldn’t a friending system lead to the balkanisation of Derpibooru?
 
Besides, if anyone here is anything like me, then they’ll be using the same username elsewhere, thus it shouldn’t be too difficult for people to friend one another on more appropriate friending forums

The one feature that WOULD be good is something that allows you to quickly see who replied to your comments/who commented on pictures you commented.

Although the community here is very…uh…interesting and entertaining, I don’t see any need whatsoever for this feature. You can view comments made by another user and add artists to your “Watched” list like @dragonSpike said.
 
I rarely use my real Facebook account (although I do have one under my user name for following my local Brony group) so I probably wouldn’t use such a feature here.

Watch tags for registered users, maybe? Such as when a certain user uploads art, it notifies you like it does when you watch a regular tag and a submission gets uploaded or is edited to have that tag.
