I imagine an episode where Celestia tells Twilight, that in order to become a true Master Wizard she has to teach her secrets of magic to an apprentice. Hilarity ensues as Twilight is hopeless to find a worthy student, travelling with Spike around the town and trying to find a real talented unicorn, but rejecting all contestants in the end. After the search, the tired and weary Twilight finally notices the one who has assisted her through the “exams tournament” and showed great theoretical knowledge of magic, taken from herself - Spike. She congratulates him on becoming the first ever dragon wizard!
 
The moral of the story is about noticing talent in those we consider the closest to us.

I find odd that ponies would take a dragon as their apprentice considering how limited their knowledge about dragons are.

If Spike’s right, that means that his first order of business is to bring a broom to life, have it fetch and pour out buckets of water, and then watch it all backfire horribly.

A fanfic posted on FiMFiction actually runs with that idea. By focusing on her desire to protect and help his friends, Spike is able to grow in size and power and kick ass hand to hand.

That something intersting, because they said he grew with greed as a personality trait and not the value of his stash, so dragons may potentially control their growth if they control their emotions about greed.

Well, he could stand to learn how to control his growth ability.

That would be giving him far more respect and character development then this show is capable of.

It’s probably not happening, just threw it out there.
 
I am curious about these “dragon powers” he needs to discover, though. Then again, given the quality and accuracy of that clip, it wouldn’t surprise me if they never mention those powers.

Anyway, there probably is different forms of magic. Unicorns are probably like Arcane Mages, using raw magic.
