Maybe they use artificial propulsion or the like? I mean, they Zipp barely flaps... also, apparently pegasi have a higher tech level than the other two races (earth ponies apparently reached post WW2 level - public transportation, rounded cars) - , unicorn tech is, well, wood - and they got smartphones)
