Exactly.
He was sorry about this too which is why he sweared to make up for it. Hes not making excuses in part 2 hes telling it how it is, he had good intentions but he know realizes he was wrong and well do whatever he can to make it up to them.

He already betrayed them for Tirek before and he was actually sorry about it. But in this he still makes excuses and pulls the “but in my defense” card. If you threw a rock onto your friend’s face, apologized for it, only to throw poop at them next time and try to justify it with “i was only testing if you will dodge in time” then i can 100% guarantee that person would not trust you anymore regardless if you helped to clean it up.
Agreed. Everyone’s so focused on hating him for causing Equestria’s near-downfall that they either forget or ignore what he did to atone for his actions (such as the moment you mentioned).
