I abandoned my landing and dove down, attempting to escape the falling rocks, my wings protested as I corkscrewed and twisted clumsily, but I pushed myself through it. Suddenly, a boulder clipped one of my wings, throwing me out of balance and into a downwards spiral. I collided with Spike’s horde, scattering bits and books all over the floor, and crashing into sets of golden armour and just barely avoiding the decorative weapons he had stolen. For a spell, I was seeing birds and butterflies flying around, I shook my head and they faded away, and the cave came back into focus.
I stood back onto my hooves, and winced at the sharp pain in my wing. I had landed on it and sprained it badly, rendering me flightless. I carefully folded my wing away with the assistance of a hoof, and took stock of my situation. Spike had lost sight of me, and was searching the nooks and crevices on the opposite side of the large cavern. Boulders and rubble littered the floor, and Spike’s tail was waving idly above them. I ran through the vast collection of treasures, and leapt onto a large rock. From there, I started hopping onto bigger and bigger boulders and debris, taking a final leap onto Spike’s tail as it passed. I stumbled a little upon the unsteady surface, and bit down into one of Spike’s spines to steady myself. The dragon realised where I was, and started to crane his neck around.
Not wasting a heartbeat, I clambered up his body, making it impossible for him to see or reach me. Spike let out an irritated roar, and started to jump and thrash about. I bit down on one of his scales and held on for dear life, praying that the scale wouldn’t fail me and come out, or that I would lose my grip and fall. Spike slammed into walls and shook the cave, causing more debris to fall. Rocks landed on him, making him stop and cover his head as they bounced off him and tumbled down towards me. One barely missed me, but another was following behind, I swung to the side and let go, flinging myself clear of the falling rock, and planted my hooves onto Spike’s back. I slid down a little as I was trying to get a grip, but my hooves finally found purchase, and I started climbing back up hurriedly, using missing and damaged scales to climb up and hang on with. Spike came down onto all fours, making the surface horizontal. No longer needing to climb, I started to gallop along his back, almost reaching his shoulder height before he started to shake like a wet dog. I lost my balance and fell onto my side, and in a panic I scrambled over to one the green spines on Spike’s back and bit down and held on tight. Realising his tactic wasn’t working, Spike stopped shaking, and instead started to try and roll onto his back. I let go and ran to stay upright on Spike, and made for his shoulder, the sound of boulders being ground into dust as they were crushed leaving nothing to my imagination if I were to fall.
I was now on the front side of Spike, treading on the softer scales, making my prescence even more known. He reached a claw out to grab me, and I just barely slipped between his digits. He closed his claw and brought it infront of his vision, and was surprised to see it was empty. He growled angrily as I started to gallop up his neck, and reached to grab again. This time, I leapt up and bit onto a loose purple scale to escape his blind grab, the sharpness of it cut my mouth and drew blood. As his claw retreated, the scale proved too loose to stay attached, and I dropped back onto the green scales on the underside of his neck. Spike felt me drop down and started to reach to grab with both claws this time, his patience already wearing thin. I met the palm of one claw with a swift buck, and by reflex it closed like a trap. I then clambered onto it to escape the other open claw, taking the purple scale with me.
For a moment Spike had lost track of me, and he stood upright to see his arms and to try to cause me to slip and fall if I were still on his neck. As soon as he spotted me stood on the back of his claw, his eyes narrowed and a growl escaped him, and he started to take a breath in.
I looked around me for somewhere to leap to, but there was nowhere to go, and running up his arm wouldn’t escape his fire-breath. I tasted the blood in my mouth, and looked down to see the way the purple scale in my mouth was catching the light. My eyes fell upon the hand I was stood on, and I had an idea. I looked up at Spike, and saw the tell-tale glow escaping his nostrils. ‘Mmf Thorry.’ I said in apology, and drove the tip of the scale into his claw as hard as I could. Spike roared out and threw his claw up in pain, launching me up into the air. The scale left my grip and I spun around helplessly, unable to fly with a sprained wing. I started to fall, and I closed my eyes so that I wouldn’t see the ground come rushing up to me. I hit the floor much sooner than I anticipated, and I was still alive, if badly battered and bruised. I opened my eyes, and they met two massive, green eyes, focused on me with intense fury.
