Backstory:
Dusk Spike Gold was the first child of Princess Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer. Since a young age he was always forced to conform to the role of a prince and he hated it. He went to normal school and was introduced to how normal ponies lived their lives and discovered that he preferred to live like them. He brought this up to his mother, but it didn’t change anything. He still had to conform to all of her expectations.
Dusk grew up as a rather quiet colt. Due to his limited self expression at home it sort of became a habit for him to bottle everything up and not open up that much. He did have friends and wasn’t bullied, quite the opposite in fact- a lot of foals from his class adored him and wanted to be friends with him, because of the simple fact that he was a prince. He was able to establish a few true friendships, though, which made him happy.
Dusk Gold started becoming a bit more rebellious at 11, which his mothers disliked, but this was only the start to freeing himself and letting himself be his true self.
Dusk had always been able to control his dreams a little more than an average pony. He just assumed he was really good at lucid dreaming when he learned what that was, but little did he know it went much deeper than that. At 12 he found himself being able to visit other ponies’ dreams and freely fly around the Dream Realm. He told his mothers about this and they informed Princess Luna, who gladly took Dusk under her wing to teach him how to control his abilities and potentially become a Prince of the Dream Realm like her. Dusk both despised and was drawn to this idea. Being crowned as the Prince of something in the future sounded like a pure nightmare to him, yet he felt like he had found his purpose in life and was close to getting his cutie mark. As the only blank flank in his small circle of friends he felt pressured to get his own, so he accepted Princess Luna training him. Little did he know it would him 2 more years for a mark to appear on his flank.
Luna became more than a teacher to Dusk. She knew he was going through a lot and she disagreed with Twilight making him conform to the role of a prince, but she couldn’t just tell her that. Dusk’s life was in his own hooves to control and he had to be the one to tell her off.
So, Luna would often put him through nightmares, to teach him different lessons. She also wanted him to be fairly desensitized for when he had to take care of other ponies’ nightmares. Luna never revealed her intentions with this, but Dusk did learn a lot during this period of his life.
When he was 14 Twilight started to talk about having him coronated as the second prince of the Dream Realm and Dusk hated it. He had grown fairly rebellious at that point, but he still just went with a lot of things his mother said. That night he had a really long lucid nightmare, which ended with him being confronted by Luna, who gave him the final push to just be himself and not let anyone control him. That day Celestia and Luna had come to Ponyville to discuss Dusk’s coronation and he finally told them everything. How the responsibility of a prince was too much for him and he was still child, how he wasn’t willing to conform to his mother’s ridiculous expectations. When he was done Celestia got up from her seat and Dusk got so scared, because he thought she was going to shout at him, but instead she put her hoof on his shoulder and told him she agreed with his decision. She told Twilight that her son was right and she should give him more time to grow up and make mistakes. Just then Dusk felt a feeling of pure euphoria go through his body and when he turned around there was a small flash of light and his cutie mark appeared.
Since then Dusk has changed a fair bit. He is more open and even rude at times, but that is not to say his journey is over. Getting his cutie mark and making him realize his destiny was one step into Dusk’s ascension into becoming the next prince of the Dream Realm.
Personality:
Dusk Gold is the type of colt that might not come off as nice when you first meet him. He is sarcastic and cracks a lot of jokes some of them dark humored, and even aimed at the pony he is conversing with. He rarely has bad intentions when doing this, but this is why most ponies, who know him view him as a spoiled prince, who can get away with anything.
He is rather down to earth and uses logic to solve most of his problems. Because of this he might come off as cold even when he really does care. Even though he doesn’t show it often, he cares really deeply, he just has a hard time showing it, because of all of his younger years spent hiding his emotions. Whenever he sees a friend of his in trouble he usually tries to give them advice and solve their problem with the best of his ability. He has learned a great deal of how to help ponies from Princess Luna, and even though he yet has to learn even more, most ponies see his advice as reliable.
Dusk is kind of a mischievous colt. He enjoys pulling pranks with his friends and all those stuff. He is rather calculated in his schemes and succeeds most of the time. Dusk Gold is actually really clever and sharp-minded and this mostly shines in his sense of humor.
He is also a bit of a geek as well. Just like both of his mothers, he’s a huge bookworm and when he isn’t hanging out with his friends, or randomly flying through the sky for fun, he is most likely reading.
Dusk has a superiority complex and believes he is intellectually superior to everyone just, because of all the things he learned in the Dream Realm and because he reads a lot. While he is clever, this complex is rooted in insecurity for the most part and him wanting to believe he is more ready than he is to be helping Luna in the realm.
Random facts:
His mothers made him date Trixie’s daughter Violent Moonlight when he was 11. He hated it and broke up with her a year later. Violent is obsessed with him and still stalks him from time to time.
-The reason why his middle name is Spike is because in the months leading up to his mothers’ wedding, Spike had his mold, which made him want to move away and sort explore his dragonness. Twilight was extremely against it, but with some convincing by Sunset Twi finally let him go, physically at least. Emotionally Twilight was deeply attached to Spike. Since she had hatched him out she viewed herself as his mother, so this is why Twilight offered Sunset to have a baby really soon after their wedding. When they discovered it was a colt, Twilight immediately gave him ‘‘Spike’’ as a middle name.
