Probably because it uses ripped graphics from games people knew, so it just feels weird.

(Or just using a freely available graphics tileset http://www.pixelprospector.com/the-big-list-of-royalty-free-graphics/ rather than reusing bits and pieces from games as well known as Sonic and Mario. It’s just really dissonant feeling.)

The game might end up being fun, but if they can get an artist to whip up some all-original graphics, they might screenshots might be more impressive.
