A few days ago I mentioned to someone that strictly speaking it really doesn’t take much effort for people to mistrust each other in Equestria, heck in the finale Chrysalis managed this almost singlehandedly just by lying a little bit here and there, to the point that windigos return to Equestria. It’s almost like the ones directly involved with the mane 6 are the only ones who have been influenced by the elements of harmony and the magic of friendship and everyone else is just there, doing stuff. Not so hard to believe that after Twilight and friends are gone everything just goes to shit, you just need one good liar.

I actually don’t mind that idea, the whole thing started and ended with a book after all, but that might be me really wishing G5’s world and G4 weren’t connected at all (it wasn’t the case in previous gens afaik, _{not fully sure about G1 and 2}).
 
I’m honestly more weirded out by the idea of this being the same Equestria, how long does the timeskip have to be to not make it look like Twilight (and friends) messed up like OP suggests? How much of a nothing their actions had to be for things to end up worse than when Sunbutt was ruling alone? And what about all the semi immortal beings roaming around the planet at the end of the show? Are they going to show up?
 
I really wish G5 is its own thing.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Maybe she had to sacrifice herself or somepony sent her to another dimension and she couldn’t do anything about it.

There are a few different rumors floating around that in G5, G4 never happened.  
It was a “TV Show” inside G5, because G5 will be more technologically advanced.  
That’s why the main character has figurines of the Mane 6 and stuff like that.
 
…So if that’s true, there was literally no point.  
And it would obviously be Hasbro’s final slap in the face to it’s adult fans.  
Something they’ve been doing actively since Season 7.
