I would say best for them not to he a couple for the same reason I didn’t want the mane 6 To be in romances with each other.  
If the point of their relationship is How strong friendship is making them a couple could weaken the lesson

The “mlp writters” for ALL of the Equestria Girls Movies (4) & 44/50 minutes “Specials” were all from DHX (Decode HalifaX Media, Vancouver); plus also a bit from the old HASBRO´s MLP liason team (that were FIRED after the 2017´s leaks).  
. The ONLY things that were done ENTIRELY (script+animation) by Boulder Media were some EQG “Shorts” (set “inside” the first Equestria Girls movie “Through The Mirror”); and the “FiM special” [originally a MLP 2017´s sequel movie] rebranded as “Rainbow Roadtrip” [precisely the one with a simple romance story as a sub_surface “b-plot” that ends with a proposal].
 
-> Boulder Media (Ireland) helped to animate other stuff for HASBRO, but after the “fiasco” with Sunset´s Pet Lizard/gecko “Ray of Sunshine” (a “Boulder Exclusive” character); all scripts were handled back to DHX.
 
Given that the studios of DHX does not exist anymore (it was dismantled, with their company renamed, sold & almost everyone working there “retired”); it is likely the case that no writters from G4/Equestria Girls would be working for the Movie or the 44_minute special (maybe later for the tv series).
