Yes. Yes, it can! And there's also the fact color schemes and Cutie Marks may change between generations. I have two possible examples: Whizzer and Dizzy Lizzy. Either one of them may be the inspiration for the unicorn (whose name supposedly is Izzy), but there are lots of differences between them.
