I think this works on the same principle as “Why doesn’t the Joker just shoot Batman with a real gun/etc.?”. There’s a couple of reasons:

Yeah, the games that he played were a defense mechanism. He somehow convinced himself that friendship was worthless and that his games were more fun. You can tell by the way he described just what exactly was at stake if he were to act chaotically towards the mane six that he really just wanted what Fluttershy gave him all along.

Exactly. Discord has enough power to hit the “I Win” button whenever he wants (like when Fluttershy refused to play along with his mind games) but his childish mentality keeps him from doing so. In “Flutter On” even though they had the elements at the ready, Discord could have just teleported a million miles away while dropping a meteor on the down.
 
But he dosen’t because he likes to play games. Why just instantly crush your enemies in one blow, when you can play along with them, turning their plans against each other and ruining their friendship. Of course, he never counted on developing genuinely positive feelings towards Fluttershy.

He wouldn’t do that because it wouldn’t be interesting enough for him. The M6 would die and the fun would end.
 
If I were Discord, I would put my victims in creatively terrifying situations, such as being stuck in a locked room with a carnivorous dinosaur, or being stuck forever in a box at the bottom of the ocean with no hope of getting out.

The thing is that he’d never attack the only beings who ever considered him a friend, the thing he wanted more than anything. That’s why he was obnoxious: he wanted a friend.

Meh, if he were that powerful he would have snapped the Mane 6 into underground mine shafts and active volcano’s in three seconds.
 
I think his powers are locked into annoy mode.

I expect Discord to not actually directly help the Mane 6 with a big problem or antagonist but lead them with some distant clue.

Sorry Discord, Celestia already has that spot.

He completely re-wrote Fluttershy’s personality with a snap of his fingers (why he didn’t do this at the climax of “Flutter On” remains another question entirely) and he completely overpowers the princesses to the point they don’t even try to fight back as he tosses the moon and sun around like juggling balls. He could switch Sombra’s brain with a cat, he could turn all the Changlings into paper mâché, he could turn that red dragon’s wings into hot air balloons and send him floating away, there is literally nothing he couldn’t do to the next big bad that comes knocking, and I greatly anticipate how they will sidestep this.

Discord is basically omnipotent.
 
The only reason he won’t end up destroying dramatic tension is because he’d think it be more “entertaining” to let the Mane 6 handle it.

I CAN’T WAIT to see Discord as a good guy in Season 4.  
Turning him good reminds me of bringing back the T-800 in Terminator 2 as a “good guy”.

What can Discord do, anyway? None of the stuff he did would be terribly disruptive to a villain like Chrysalis or Sombra.

I really don’t know any other way to avoid breaking the story.
