Update: I have a third web browser, Google Chrome, which I haven't been using for months. It seems that when I opened that up, it did so without closing and reopening as Firefox and Edge had done. Then, when I went back to Firefox and Edge, they opened up without closing and reopening. Apparently, there's an advantage to having more than two browsers on one computer.
Also, it seems that Internet Explorer is such a good browser that it isn't recognized by Microsoft anymore.
