In Civ V, you can lower a rival nation’s standing in the world by choosing to publicly denounce them. This will make other civs look on them less-favorably, but the denounced civ won’t be too happy about what you’ve been telling the neighbors.  
This screenshot came from a game that had involved several pony civ mods, including the New Crystal Empire and the Pegasi. The player decided to denounce the Pegasi, and since he had gained the favor of Princess Cadence, the New Crystal Empire did the same.
