It’s been a long time since I’ve done a headcanon like this!
I mentioned in my last journal that I haven’t really been too active on here. I’m way more active over on TikTok. I don’t really post too many drawings or anything there, most of the stuff I post is Korra/Avatar related. But if you wanna check it out here’s the link: www.tiktok.com/@haileykareena?…
Anyway! Onto the actual headcanon

Anyway! Onto the actual headcanon

- Luna has bat wings, but she often “masks” them out of embarrassment. Batponies came into existence as a direct result of Nightmare Moon’s reign to serve as her subjects. For years after batponies are freed from the bond, they continue to be persecuted and publicly humiliated. She used to have regular pegasus wings before her transformation into Nightmare Moon. After she is saved from Nightmare Moon, her body and mind suffer permanently. She develops dark splotches all around her fur, which carry over into some unicorns, pegasi, and batponies who are descendants from her original subjects.
- Luna’s job is actually way more important than she lets on. She prevents dark spirits and entities from plaguing pony’s dreams, where they are most vulnerable. She raises the moon too, sure, but she also plays an important role in fall and winter. Most famously she’s associated with the moon.
- She’s always been lonely, always felt incapable of love. She falls into a toxic relationship with King Sombra, desperate for some sort of affection… once he disappears again, she’s left with a son. Even when she’s given the chance to love him unconditionally, she gives him up, afraid of her reputation. It’s the biggest regret of her life, and she thinks about him every day, tormenting herself repeatedly. After that, she really doesn’t feel worthy of anyone’s love, not even Celestia’s.
- She’s actually kinda a shorty for her age. Still the second tallest alicorn, but Cadence seems to be growing still. She’s a few years younger than Celestia, but her time spent on the moon paused her age cycle. Once she returns to Equestria her body rushes to make up for lost time, aging her 1,000 years in just a few weeks, but she’s still pretty short when compared to big sis Tia
- Luna and Nightmare Moon are technically two different beings. Nightmare Moon is what happened when a dark force combined with her weakening morality. They fused and became Nightmare Moon. She was fully conscious of everything that occurred through Nightmare Moon, but she does try to separate herself from NM to alleviate some of the guilt.
- Luna’s always been frustrated with her sister. It almost feels like Celestia projects her superiority, trying to prove that what she does is more important, especially because she was able to do it without Luna. Celestia is viewed as a hero throughout history while Luna the villain, and while Celestia definitely suffered, Luna was imprisoned on the moon for a thousand years, stuck to freeze in the harsh environment of space. The Nightmare Moon story isn’t as simple as the books make it seem. It’s a story of betrayal and loss. Luna was a victim, too.
- Luna’s pretty fond of her niece and nephew (Damon and Khaleesi), but it pains her to be around them. She wants to treat them as her own kids, and in a way they are, but she never fails to remind herself that she did have her own kid. And she left him to die.
- She’s super reserved and doesn’t talk much about her personal life at all. No one knows of her involvement with Sombra or that she even had a kid. She’s pretty socially awkward but she does love going to parties and pretending she’s just another face in the crowd. She’s always wanted to feel normal.
- The only pony who really made any sort of progress with her was Pinkie Pie. Pinkie sort of acts as her therapist for a little while, just someone to talk to who isn’t Judge-y Celestia.
- She’s not even really sure if she loved Sombra. If she was even attracted to him. She wonders if she convinced herself that she did in hopes of forming a connection. For someone to actually care about her for once. She’s only ever really known love for Celestia and Panther, at least for certain.
- Even though Celestia agitates her beyond belief, Luna would do anything for her. She’s completely and unfalteringly loyal to her sister.
- She often gets diplomatic marriage proposals from ponies of all over. Some of high status and other… random fans. She’s been courted by many but no one’s gotten to know her well enough to actually want that with her. She really does hope she’ll get a happy ending someday.
