well, they’ve been foreshadowing it since the beginning of the show, starting with her having the “big crown thingy” of magic, continuing with celestia saying she had never seen a unicorn with so much potential before, and subsequently her being asked to be the immortal god princess’s personal protege. also, somehow her babysitter “just so happened to be” another immortal god princess that ended up screwing her brother. ]yes, she totally didn’t have anything that would hint at her becoming an alicorn in the future.[

I guess that’s why Luna looked pissed off during most of that scene, she didn’t want to risk Twilight on an unfinished spell even though Celestia had faith she could do it.

Yeah, the whole Alicorn thing could have used more foreshadowing. I’d rather have the show gradually hint at what will develop next over the season, as opposed to one vague hint in the beginning, then the staff just outright telling us over Twitter.
 
Also seems like that bit where they focused on the broken piece of Sombra’s horn was a red herring.
