According to M. A. Larson, Starswirl’s spell was added to his script after the fact. My best guess is it’s a “change destiny” spell, added just in case they decided to make Twilicorn temporary.

or maybe it’s an interdimensional time/space manipulation spell and it allows the user to travel around as if they were a tardis. (and then the core of the tardis was revealed to be twilight sparkle)

it changes your destiny. considering that some people think discord’s going to be turned into a pony (back into a pony in many peoples’ minds) maybe they’re going to use the spell to switch his special talent for causing chaos to the cutie mark crusaders or something, thus mitigating his powers.
