She didn’t say “quite an odd pairing” as in love couple, She said “quite the odd pairing” as in a duo that doesn’t get along well and are completely different from eachother.
maybe the diamond dogs that rarity said had bad breath were their first patients?
Fair enough.
*Grow out of strong friendships, I meant to say. An important distinction. :)
Maybe. But that’s pretty much going to be the same for all of the ships involving the mane characters, in choosing to ship something and interpret things as more than friends or else to completely disregard canon and have fun with a pairing just for the enjoyment. But in my own experience most of the best relationships grow out of friendships, and out of all of them I think it has the greatest potential. It’s just my own preference.
Them being friends isn’t really a twist so much as the norm these days, thanks to things like The Odd Couple truthfully, but I see what your saying.
The fact that they are friends though is part of the reason I just don’t see the ship. All there interaction is just that, as friends, and good ones at that. A better argument for the contrast could be made if they were more antagonistic really.
Oh. Well maybe it is a direct reference then, I don’t know since I never really watched a ton of that show. I can’t imagine a lot of other people would get it either, but it’s possible.
And yeah, I do think the contrast is part of the appeal for a lot of people, again, self included. It’s the classic, almost overdone romance trope of the airy sophisticate with the down-to-earth bumpkin type, only with a twist since they actually are good friends too.
And that’s fine. I just mentioned it because I’m fairly certain that something almost exactly like this scene appeared in an episode of the Odd Couple. Given the myriad of other references to things in this issue it seemed to make sense.
I only mentioned my views on rarijack because you said that their contrast was part of the appeal.
I think it can be applied to a lot of other things as well, or likewise Rarity/AJ’s chemistry can be compared to that between other characters. I’m not really arguing that, I just didn’t think anything in the comic seemed like a direct reference to the Odd Couple, that’s all. /shrug/
Everything you just said is applied to the Odd Couple as well. That was kind of the idea behind the story. Felix and Oscar had different lifestyles, but were still best friends and had things in common.
I wonder if Chrysalis enjoys the oddness and reads/ships rarijack, or if she finds it offensively odd and prefers Appledash :Þ
That can be said of them any time though, even though the comic exaggerates the interaction like it does the art style. They still have a lot in common beneath the surface though, and have been shown to be close friends who will seek out each other’s company in the cartoon. The fact that the cliche “opposites attract” dynamic can just add comedy and cuteness is an added bonus for those who like the ship, even if it’s not the main appeal.
But different strokes for different folks.
It wasn’t just the wording that seemed like it was an Odd Couple reference, it was what Rarity and Applejack were doing as well. Pretty much all their interaction in this vein remind me of Felix and Oscar, which part of why I don’t ship them.
I think if they were trying to make a reference to “The Odd Couple” they would have been a little more obvious with it, such as having Chrysalis use those words for example. While I’m not saying they were necessarily trying to give a nod to a romantic relationship, it still is a direct comment on their chemistry together as two characters, which in all its quirkiness is what makes a lot of Rarijack shippers fans of the pairing, self included.
Honestly, it strikes me as more of a nod to “The Odd Couple” than rarijack.
Knowing the CMC, they probably got patients by kidnapping them.
