The thing is, there are 3 options:
 
1. Have those white outline things, which look fine on a white background.
 
2. Have a completely solid white background.
 
3. Have really bad-looking sharp edges because there's no partial transparency in GIFs.


 
The "[APNG version":](http://i.imgur.com/CoiQFtB.png) is a lot better (still not completely perfect, but it's a vast improvement over this version); I really wish we (the Internet) would start moving away from GIFs in general.
