Matthew does not know what he was capable of and it's only the ability to learn fast which makes him a genius, Matthew only knew of Griffin from a pony and search his way to find info of him and does it fast because the town he was in was near by and news spreads while some still remain local (like the Jekyll and Hyde story in this world) while the story of an invisible pony is more interesting or a story about a skull faced pony love story is more interesting and dramatic


 
Also Matthew is only a simple pony still just because he's a genius does not mean he's like a superhero,
also Griffin is not a ghost he's an albino if he was a ghost he would of been transparent and won't feel pain since ghost are fully dead I still come consider Griffin undead but he can still feel pain
