also, isn’t the value of a gem dependent on how “perfect” or “flawless” it is? Maybe a huge gem with tons of flaws is worth less than a tiny one that’s totally flawless.
 
And Spike, seeing as how he doesn’t care about the monetary value of them and only cares about eating them, would easily give away a small “Perfect” one, since it wouldn’t be very filling.

That gem might have been special. Spike guarded it the least because it was the smallest, but it could have been worth the most. There are different kinds of gems, and their tastiness could have nothing to do with their monetary value.
 
But in all likelihood the writers don’t have a set of rules for this and don’t think it’s important.

Meh, the value of Gems can be calculated by actual worth.
 
Like, say, if someone really wanted a gem the person selling it could charge more because of that. That’s actually how Diamonds are sold, they are worth less then what you buy them for.
