The idea that obscene words made the mouth literally, as well as figuratively, unclean. Probably dates back to the middle ages at a guess. >_>

Also interesting to know where the thing about “washing a mouth with soap if you say dirty words” originated.
Is that regular soap, or carbolic soap?
I remember on Scout camp once, one of the boys got caught saying “fuck” by a leader, who then really did proceed to wash his mouth out with carbolic soap.
…Can’t do that anymore though… xD (it was common practice in previous decades, dying out in the 90s when I last saw it done)
