The first time he spoke, he mocked Lullaby because she couldn’t fly. So watching Tempest break his wings is just the perfect ironic punishment. Of course, Tempesting beating him to a pulp will rightfully freak-out Lullaby and probably Thistle, too. Even if he deserved it, it’s still scary to watching Tempest brutally beating up somepony.
 
It wouldn’t genuinely be ironic though, it’s more like poetic justice.

Real talk, though, the trajectory of his swing a few pages before, the blood splatter, the fact that Thistle seems to be holding Lullaby’s back, and finally because it would be perfect dramatic irony: my guess is that Lulu just had her wing chopped off.
