Description

Hey
Recently I noticed that in Pony fandom, people tell much often in their blog/comments about problems that they face in real life, such as problems at school, unemployment, sickness or family. I observed numerous other fandoms/internet mirco-societies and people generally would avoid this topic. Normally I would do some statistics test, but while not impossible with proper text mining, it would be a tremendous job so I will violate all rules of scientific approach and tell you my theories starting with most probable in my opinion. I would be happy to hear your opinion.
  1. It is coincidence/result of my flawed perception. Sharing painful parts of your life is not more prominent in brony fandom.
  2. MLP and fandom influences people to be more outgoing about their problems
  3. MLP attracts people who currently have problems in real life, possibly as colorful and optimistic alternative.
  4. MLP attracts people more prone to having serious life problems in general, possibly because of being more sensitive or less competitive nature.
    5.Something else?

I know this is image board, but since Im stalkerish type of person I dont want to invade some random message boards with new account, just to ask this question. Thank you for your time.

It’s very likely impossible to arrive at a meaningful answer without doing “some statistics test,” and the structure of such a study would matter much more than the statistical tests it employed. I strongly suspect that if you were to actually perform this research, you’d find something very similar to 1.

That said, bronies are probably unusually likely to break with established gender norms, and stereotypical masculinity discourages men from talking about their feelings or personal problems. So bronies might show a greater willingness to talk about their lives than the general population, as a simple consequence of the fact that they collectively have a weaker commitment to gender stereotypes.

Maybe this fandom have both an advantage of internet without one of is inconvenient.

People can talk about their problems with the same protection of real life retaliation that anonymity give them on the rest of internet but since we are all connected by this show they feel like there is less danger of being just ridiculed than with people that share nothing with you.

Well I have ‘problems’ and I feel better venting or sharing them with friends and such I have met in this fandom. I also like helping others if they have problems, and also like getting to know them.

Perhaps they simply aren’t attacked as much for sharing; I’ve found that well-adjusted people tend to be happy to listen to others’ problems (not ad nauseum, of course, but still), while the people lambasting others for “whining” are generally miserable and need some sort of outlet.

I’m flippin’ happy with my life, though, so who knows?

Huh. A few people on the DC Bronies page on Facebook were just discussing this a bit.

Odd timing for this to show up…

I think it’s because of the sheer quantity of Pony stuff on the internet allows for easier “fitting in.” The fandom, as far as I know, is really nothing all that spectacular. While I do have some baggage, I try to distribute the stuff thru PMs here. That’s not to say I don’t have other means of expressing what I feel, I just feel closer to certain individuals here.

@Background Pony
Thanks for good response. I don’t know if it is healthy or not - it was just an observation. Personally I ussually keep my problems to myself/closest social circle, but this is just how my mentality works.
@Feral_Socks
I don’t want to “generalize” as you say - especially since I don’t take this as negative or positive trait in people. I’m just curious about how some psychological traits have different distribution in different groups.

Actually /mlp/ isn’t so bad as long as your “my gf just dumped me, hugbox pls!” thread also has a “let’s have a pinkie thread to cheer me up” or something along those lines.

Most people have problems, but are afraid to share them in fear of being made fun of; I don’t think I have ever met a human who hasn’t had a single personal problem in their life. Brony community for the most part has made people more willing to share them, because the people writing know that bronies are on average more accepting of different people and their problems.

That’d be my guess anyways, but I haven’t really followed any blogs or compared them with one another to make an useful estimate.

I think its because of a sense of kinship in being part of a fandom rather than just random folks over the internet, people feel more willing to talk about their problems because they feel the other might understand them more and / or they think they are less likely to be made fun of

Or something

I only took psychology class in that I got to borrow a Textbook for five months

Depends on the microsociety in particular rather than the fandom.
Try making a post about real life issues on /mlp/ and then on Ponychan.
I’d be surprised if you get the same reactions from both.

  1. It is coincidence/result of my flawed perception. Sharing painful parts of your life is not more prominent in brony fandom.
It is more promanent then in others. We have areas such as MyLittleSupportGroup for containment and specialist help.

  2. MLP and fandom influences people to be more outgoing about their problems
I agree, this is one of the things the show seems to encourage, even if indirectly.

  3. MLP attracts people who currently have problems in real life, possibly as colorful and optimistic alternative.
This is called escapism. It can happen in any medium, not just happy ones.

  4. MLP attracts people more prone to having serious life problems in general, possibly because of being more sensitive or less competitive nature.

Not Sure. MLP defiantly has a higher percentage of content creators compared to many fandoms. Perhaps a creative mind is linkable to problems, or the need to share them?

    5.Something else?
Is sharing problems not healthy? Some individuals will loose their shit if they trap themselves in a false isolation.
Background Pony #1093
MLP attracts such people because we’re the ones hanging out on the internet 24/7, using it as an escape tool.
Background Pony #A9EF
My explanation is encased in my name for the phenomenon- the “Letter To Celestia Effect”
Background Pony #8139
I haven’t noticed it being more prevalent than in any other fandom I’ve seen.
