I don’t know how large it should be, so I can’t say it’s too large in the first. The first film established how large it should be. The second film made it too large.

Do you know what “too large” means?
It’s large in both films, but it’s too large in the second film.
The beam is large in both the first and the second films!
The point is to show that, with the size it is at, the people should have been right outside. The beam is too large in the sequel.
They could have easily made that beam smaller, and still have it work.
