I feel this is the purpose of memory journal. So Twilight had something to remember her friends after centuries they are gone.

I think the arc of 6 extra episodes will have some implications (too subtle though.)  
I read leaked scripts briefly.

If the show was able to do it, I would bet there would have been an episode of Twilight afraid of her friends growing older while she remains young.
 
After seeing the youth of her friends fade with grey hair and aged faces, Twilight desperately tries to find a spell to make them immortal, and even though, she may have found one they tell her after all the adventures they’re fine with growing old and watching their kin grow. So after a bit Twilight excepts it, slowly and surly they all laugh as at stories told as each of them pass on.
 
Twilight with new students peering at the stain glass of them, one asks “What were they like?” and she smiles “They are the best friends a pony could have.” as ghostly visages of the 6(Yes Starlight) are shown behind a the group, smiling at Princess Twilight Sparkle.
