Granted, I don’t think it was canon until much later.
I don’t think they planned on ‘shipping them like say back in Season 1 or 2 when they were just background ponies whom only appeared once on a bench together. (And apparently that’s all it takes for ’shippers to run with something.) It was obviously influenced by the fandom, and not something that was always planned. Especially, sense the ‘ship didn’t start becoming popular until like Season 3, or 4.
