Description
I know this show is bad at continuity sometimes, so this isn’t very surprising.

So aside from that moment (mentioned in this thread before), there’s also an extremely easy moment to miss, in S8, where you really have to slow it down and/or go frame-by-frame to see it. (start at 2:25).

She legit casted Accelero, hence the other two and Terramar looking confused afterwards. (10/10 attention to detail there, having such a throwaway moment not just be “Toon Physics”)
That, coupled with other things arguably makes Sweetie Belle one of the most underrated magic users, considering how little attention is drawn to her prowess. Arguably is a plot point they could have done more with/drawn more attention to, her being rather talented (especially for her age), but I digress.
Soft magic rules also seem like it goes well with the moral of Marks and Recreation, where the point was a pony can have multiple talents, not necessarily related to what their mark is.
(Still unfortunate if you got Troubleshoes’d though, and sometimes your potential just isn’t that great, ala Sunburst, or some such)I guess a point I want to make is it’s arguably an improvement, not being bound to that hard rule, in some ways. Nothing’s wrong with hard rule-based stuff, but the show wasn’t really consistent on the matter even from minute one.

@sailing101
True, for the both of you. In the end, this is not really much of a plot-hole or continuity error.
Hope you both are enjoying the month if you are on break or something.
This whole argument is moot anyway because she also has a star in her cutie mark. Stars are an identifiable motif in marks showing magical talent.
Back in “Campfire Tales”, she did an impressive shield spell. My guess is that she just needs to practice more. The theory that specific spells are only meant for specific unicorns doesn’t seem to hold water given that we’ve seen even unicorns like Trixie are capable of teleportation without any negative repercussions.
I would assume Sweetie Belle is able to teleport as we see, but she either needs to practice more to improve her energy, OR practicing magic that is not meant for specific unicorns can cause mind down or even horn damage similar to flat feet people shouldn’t do excessive running as damage to the feet and legs if left unchecked can build up to complications in the future.
Oh, shut up, you Lauren Faust fanboy. You’re clearly one of those people who can’t accept change and hates the show because Faust left and is no longer involved and you’re just looking for any excuse just to complain about the show. These comments confirm that.

That’s exactly what it is!
@Prince Mainesly
More like people needlessly bitching about stupid shit just so they have something to complain about.
@Wiimeiser
This episode was written by Chris Savino. Faust oversaw its production and approved of the script.

Continuity is one of this show’s strong suits. It’s why I love it so much.
@GeneralKenobi75
This. Just . . . this.
I’m going to call citation needed on that whole “75% agree” that the show is “terrible” now. I have seen no evidence of that. And some random person on the internet ranting about how bad the show is now is not proof.
Also, how dare I not instantly respond when I have other things going on in my life besides commenting online. Unlike you, I don’t take it as seriously. I had an exam this week, and work.
I’ve been trying to tell them to just let it go…. i’m done after this post… not worth the energy with them.
well regardless of who started it, someone needs to end it
it was my opinion… the hype of this show from during season 5 and then it dwindled down. honestly move along… no sense in arguing especially since the remark back to me came off as rude and started it.
Some people have lives and jobs. If it was a week later you might have a point.
Lol, sure, whatever you say.
I’m not acting high and mighty at all… he came back to a remark that was a long time ago and got all snobby with me about it. so i got snobby with him on his remark. the fact you are now getting involved was pointless because i had nothing against what you said to begin with. this was between me and kenobi, not you. ;p
i was stating an opinion from the very start. i’m not worth the energy to even be replied to especially when so much time had passed so why even partake anyway myoozik?
I think you’re being unreasonable and a tad bit elitist right now.
Just because the majority of people have the same opinion on something doesn’t make it objectively true, which I’m curious as to where you got that 75% statistic from. There are still people out there who enjoy the show Season 6 and later like me so saying all that stuff honestly makes you sound like an elitist asshole. Yes the show has had flaws and inconsistencies as it went on, but depending on what it is, a lot of it really doesn’t matter and shouldn’t be held against the show cause it’s a petty and shallow way of thinking.
GeneralKenobi is pretty much right, you’re getting worked up over nothing and letting your bias for the earlier seasons cloud your judgement. So it’d be good to get off of your high horse and not act all high and mighty over a cartoon for little girls.
you really waited 18 hours just to clapback at me for a remark and an opinion i made? 75% of people even agree the show should have ended after season 5 so yeah you know what? 1-5 was pretty much the high and godsend.
Or maybe you’re just one of those people who gets worked up over things that aren’t really an issue. They never said other unicorns can’t learn teleportation, it’s just most usually use magic related to their talent. Which future writers took to be to restrictive. Also makes Twilight seem less like a Mary Sue since other unicorns can also be powerful mages.
Also your whining about seasons 7-9 being bad is really eye-rolling. You don’t like them fine, but other people find them just as good as the previous ones. I found them to be really good. And the previous seasons had their share of bad episodes as well. So don’t act like everything pre-season 7 was a godsend.

my favorite!
I know that continuity really hasn’t been this show’s strong suit even in the later more continuity-heavy seasons… but this is the very definition of reaching.

I think that the problem with Trixie is the discipline to focus on learning magic, but she’s actually a very natural and powerful unicorn.
Starlight said that learning the teleportation spell in an afternoon might be a record and we all know how much time it took Twilight to teleport well. Starlight has been the catalyst for Trixie to endure the training, even with her lack of discipline.
Also, are we really quoting Boast Busters as gospel?
That episode is a bit of Early Installment Weirdness to me. Magic later in the series was already generally being portrayed as “you can learn it” instead of “you’re born with it, and cannot go outside of your preset abilities unless you’re like Twilight.”
Way I think of it, without inherent talent in the form of a cutie mark like Twilight’s, learning magic comes less naturally, but it can be done nonetheless.
You can see how that it’s evident that the writers’ view on magic shifted noticeably, because Trixie’s talent is to be a good stage magician, a good illusionist, but not that much else (hence why she needed the Alicorn Amulet to exact revenge), yet she has trained herself into performing really impressive magic over the last few seasons.
(Besides, the episode indicated that Sweetie Belle probably needs a bit of work on her finesse and stamina)
