I wouldn’t say they threw out all his character development.
Beside, director Jim Miller explained about this “It was planned from the beginning. You think we were going to let a brand new baddie (new to this Gen, anyway) be the one to take on our girls at the end? We wanted it to be those 3 to have that personal connection.”
“There was no way we were not going to let those 3 baddies be the ones in the end battle. Besides, the fake out made sense to us given Discord’s demented logic.”

None of the heroes were happy he pulled this. None of them.
 
If this were a “Designated Hero” situation, he would’ve been portrayed as 100% righteous, but the narrative unequivocally pointed to “Discord fucked up royally, regardless of how well-intentioned the plan was,” and he had to save their lives to redeem himself from it.
 
And you’re correct. Discord has fancied himself as a trickster mentor, since S4, except he cares more about Twilight now. This was very apparent in the S9 premiere, where he was really insistent on Twilight winning against Sombra.
 
Only this time, the “safety net” part of the plan got blown to hell due to him underestimating his foes… which has happened with Celestia and Luna with the Elements, it happened with the Mane Six when he didn’t realize that they weren’t Discorded anymore before it was too late, it happened when he underestimated and trusted Tirek, and it happened here.
 
Discord absolutely is a flawed character, despite being both intelligent and an excellent manipulator (and a good actor, because he was good at pretending to be something he isn’t), which is why he’s interesting to me.
U understand his character perfectly always nice to see when someone does.

I dont agree with the tirek backstabbing being bad as that started him on the process of starting to value friendship but yes I agree with everything else u said.

The whole Grogar thing was for the most part in character for “reformed Discord”.  
He had genuinely good intentions but his chaotic nature and overconfidence tripped him up.
 
Backstabbing everyone by siding with Tirek … that was the writers throwing out his entire character development.  
Compared to that I found the finale rather well written.

Don’t worry, kids! Using criminals as tools is ok as long as it builds up someone’s confidence to become a leader and as long as said criminals can have the blame for your mistakes! Plus, it’ll make for a great epic battle! Seriously, finale. Buck. You.

In the attempt of Discord’s reformation, writers wanted him to be a powerful yet not always reliable ally. Discord has chaotic mind and he truly belive that his plan will work. He has only two major weaknesses: Doing orderly things and underestimating some opponents (but second one is kind of reasonable since he is a god and it is a hard for a being who can do anything 99% of the time, to even imagine not being able to do something). But honestly, which part of Discord’s role in the finale was out of character for him ? He messed things up but let’s not forget that he fixed everything as well. If it wasn’t for him, Equestria would’ve fallen. So he is both greatest Villain and Hero

Why does this have a designated hero tag? If he’s intentionally in the the wrong for and called out for this screwup, it’s not trying to portray him as the hero in this case?

How was it thrown away? Being a trickster mentor and screwing up due do arrogance are in line with his character. This is just the logical limit?
