To be fair, Hollywood and a lot of mainstream movies kind of screw up just about any genre.
I mean yes, I’m fine! why do you ask?
Oh, I have no trouble with what’s shown here. It’s nicely paced so far, and is more background growth and building a friendship first and foremost. Like I said, it’s Hollywood I have beef with.

Romance plots can happen alongside adventure or redemption arcs just fine.
Romance and attraction are part of life.
The tricky part is writing such ‘conflicting’ genres together well,
which is what a lot of hollywood movies fail at:
romance happens ‘naturally’, not ‘tacked on’ (unless the flirter is clearly meant to be insincere).
The inconvenience of timing is what makes the ‘romantic hint’ in this comic page believable.

Heh. It’s clear Mary is out of his league, but I can understand the sentiment. A male admiring Mary is not romance, it’s just common sense. She’s admirable.
Or basically any action movie made after 2000.
Like Mary Poppins. The writer of the original book did not want any hints at romance between Mary Poppins and Bert… so of course Disney has an over the top music sequence in the movie with lyrics such as “When Mary holds your hand, you feel so grand. Your heart starts beating like a big brass band.”
You haven’t seen a Hollywood movie before, have you? They are kinda universal in their need to cram a romance into everything.
After 8 years in this fandom, I should’ve known better. XD
You… do understand that romance does not preclude a redemption arc, right? Romance, by itself, is not even much of a plot element.
Shipping in this fandom is like the Spanish Inquisition. Always expect it.
