Well fluttercord was a great idea but was a bad plan on the last minute. For appledash was for people (shippers) ship them or not as is to the viewer . As only two came true Lyrabon and cheesepie and possible yonabar is a thing too.

What didn’t make it into the show didn’t happen. Appledash was teased literally last minute and is still up to interpretation. The fluttercord kiss didn’t make it in and neither did the fact big mc was going to have more than 1 kid.

However, making too many minor details canon forces fanfic authors to accept either a smaller audience (of people who don’t care that you don’t bother to ensure that you set the characters right where the show left them) or add in convolutions or irrelevant sidequests to ensure that everyone is in position for their canonical ending after your story. Sometimes I get the impression that the “why didn’t you cover these characters?” crowd is more vocal than the “you didn’t bother to put any character in her correct starting place” crowd. Why? Because the later crowd more readily admits that the fanfic diverged from the source material and the former assumes it’s meant to fit and you simply forgot their favorite ship.
 
On the positive side, there’s always the genre of fanfic that is “here are the episodes that happened between S9E25 and S9E26”, where placing the characters in the exact position the epilogue starts them in is the entire point. However, you have to have some nominal level of agreement with the character fates in the finale to write one of those stories in the first place.

Thats because fanfiction is a whole other layer of fiction… One taking a work of fiction and making a non-canon spin off with your own touches to it, basically creating an alternate universe where things are similar but different
