III can always use more love. The franchise was still finding it's footing and being experimental. It introduced mechanics that would become standard for the series (but there's very little it did that wasn't done better in later games).


 
Best way to play are the original Famicom (fansubbed ROM if need be) or the Steam or PSP version. The DS version has features that require the now-discontinued DS messaging network.


 
(Anyone playing the 8 Remaster? User reviews suggest it's mainly a cashgrab aimed at console users, and people who already own the non-remasted Steam version shouldn't bother buying it again)
