When I first started DMing, the most derailed session I’d ever had started with a simple question: “Why shouldn’t we just kill these guys?”

Pinkie Pie: Uh, History check! <roll> Hey, natural 20!
DM: Wow, you recognize them instantly. They’re known as parasprites, they reproduce asexually shortly after eating, and they’re known for their voracious appetite. Even as we speak, they’re starting to tear into Sugarcube Corner’s freshly baked wares.
Pinkie Pie: Hey! That’s MY job! …That’s my JOB! My livelihood! That’s what I meant!
Rainbow Dash: Anyway, so… these things exist. Why hasn’t Equestria been overrun yet?
Rarity: Their main habitat is the Everfree Forest, right? They’d have plenty of natural predators there.
Fluttershy: W-We should take them back, then.
Twilight Sparkle: I think it’s too late for that. They’re already eating, which means we’re minutes away from another generation of parasprites. We should eliminate them here and now!
DM: What?!
Rainbow Dash: Right on!
