The show is “My little pony” and not “my little dragon”, so it’s expected he takes a backseat to events. However, fans grew to like him and many identified with him as a sort of audience surrogate, especially since his character is mostly just that he’s a realist. We were thrown a bone here and there with Spike doing helpful and heroic deeds, though the slapstick often comes on frequently for no apparent reason in regards to him as opposed to having a buildup or being a punchline like with the others. This is due to the writers not having consistency with him and it’s not the same thing as Fluttershy’s assertiveness where she reminds everyone that she CAN stand up for herself, she just dislikes having to do so.
 
On the topic of Spike’s flying skills, aside from molt down, there is also the fact that he took the artifact through the exploding swamp with enough speed and skill to stay ahead of Rarity and Rainbowdash and evidently never slipped up, something RD didn’t even take a CHANCE to try and do. You know, the daredevil of the cast and equestria’s top flier?

Whoa, Spike! Don’t you think that’s a little — wait no. — too harsh — no — OVERLY HARSH?

Say what you want about Spike and Twilight’s relationship or Twilight’s character as a whole but you realize what Spike’s role is in the show is that he’s a supporting character and a foil most specifically to Twilight but at the same time is often the buttmonkey and punching bag to the show as form of comic relief. It’s supposed to be some form of slapstick and comedy now don’t get me wrong I enjoy slapstick as the next guy especially when it’s probably executed or deserving, take Just For Sidekicks for example it’s not my favorite episode but it showed that Spike deserved the punishment he gets because he was being selfish and greedy (some people could say it’s a dragon thing, idk), compared to how he gets punished and subjected to slapstick for being supportive and helpful or just flat out doesn’t deserve it, not just that but there are times where he is dropped, absent or forgotten almost without any explanation.
 
As for Twilgiht’s role as “parent” or a “guardian” to Spike, if you seen past episodes like Owls Well that Ends Well, Spike at Your Service, or Castle Mania, with Twilight constantly prioritizing in her studies or having her nose in the books but often neglects her surroundings especially a certain young dragon she’s suppose to care for and presumably raised. Yes, Twilight is studious, that is her character, she can be socially awkward, anxious, and even anti-social but that’s what Spike is there for, to support her and come out of that comfort zone. That’s why Spike’s the supporting character and why he’s the foil to Twilight who is the main character. Yes, that’s who Twilight is but that doesn’t exactly excuse her actions as a whole and the idea of Twilight raising and caring for Spike sounds moot especially since he’s the one supporting and caring for her the most. Not just that, but also Rarity, who often seemingly exploits his crush on her to get him to do what she says and what she wants, there’s still no telling how his egg was brought in the world of ponies, we don’t know if he was kidnapped, if his actual parents abandoned him, if he was accidentally separated world of ponies or the whereabouts of his parents …no one knows nor no seems to be stepping up in trying to find out why, not even Celestia whom presumably discovered Spike’s egg and her not knowing or bothering to find out why just makes her look oblivious and apathetic and that’s what sets a lot people off.
 
Now despite all this Spike doesn’t seem to complain or doesn’t mind it, despite how everyone does something at his expense and he believes that being an assistant to Twilight or just being helpful in general is what seems to give Spike life and he believes that’s all he lives for. Now it shows how chivalrous and a good sports he is but it kind of makes him some sort of tool.
 
 
Now admittedly Daneasaur could’ve worded that better, I really thing they mean how the show is treating Spike like dirt not just because how the’s treated lesser than others but how Hasbro and writers don’t know nor don’t care for Spike as a whole despite all the potential he seems to have. Amy Keating Rogers before she left the show entirely even claimed that there was no room for him and laughed on how they abused him, the show just doesn’t flat out like Spike and despite some of the good episodes he has (i.e. Inspiration Manifestation, Equestira Games, Gauntlet of Fire and dare I say Molt Down despite it’s own flaws), most of his episodes end with Spike being shortsighted, selfish, greedy or regressed in order to force the plot or development on him and it’s really frustrating for most viewers to watch.

I was originally gonna ignore this and go about my day but all the things you’ve typed and said really got on my nerves, so I’m just gonna say what I’m gonna say whether you take this with a grain of salt or not;
 

 
While the Season 9 is the final season of the FiM, the show hasn’t even ended yet and we haven’t got through the first episode of Season 9 while we’re still getting MLP shorts that’s prior to Season 9 and just because the show is ending doesn’t mean MLP as a series itself is ending as a whole, don’t you know that we’re getting a 5th generation of MLP? So even if the 4th generation of MLP is ending there’s still more MLP from new generations and even if FiM finally ends fans are still not gonna keep talking about it, share their views, their opinions nor stop them from continuing drawing fanart, fanfics of ideas that are probably better from the actual series and there are fans that continue to talk or review past shows that already ended to this day, shows like Ed Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly, the original Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, you get the idea and nothing’s stopping others from talking and reviewing the 4th Gen of MLP even if the show itself does finally end.
 

 

 
 
Well guess what, whether it’s not on this website people are still going to complain about shows, characters, and episodes that they don’t like and nothing’s stopping them from doing so whether it is or outside of the internet. You suggesting that others aren’t allowed to complain about a show as a rule is absurd and ironic because you brought up Fame and Misfortune which was exactly what the episode was telling viewers that they’re not allowed to have an opinion nor complain about the content they create which is exactly what you’re doing.
 
No coplaining about a show is not like complaining about politics, with that your life, your way of life is on the line when you vote….tv shows, are nothing but entertainment and shows like Transformers, MLP and others like it are primarily used to sell toys!!!!!!!!!!!!![/bq]
 
And you’re right, which is why you should know that MLP is not ending as a whole because we’re already in the process of getting a 5th generation, because MLP happens to be one of Hasbro’s cash cow the same can be said for Pokemon in which we could be getting an 8th generation soon for all we know by the time Gen 7 ends. Of course you could say that MLP is a show for girls that sells girl’s toys and you may have a point then again there are girls that enjoy DBZ as much there are grown men that enjoy MLP but do you know what they have in common? Just just marketing purposes but how much they’ve left an impact, I don’t think it would be any different if the show does end.
 
All and all, you saying how they should seek help over how they take the show seriously, but guess what there are famous artists and reviewers that practically do the same thing Dr. Wolf, Lightning Bliss, Silver Quill and Firebrand (AKA Josh Scorcher) who has a series called “Taking ‘said episode’ Too Seriously” which revolves around analyzing, nitpicking and even challenging the viewer’s opinion on certain views on the show and the world. There are a lot of communities that have become a lot worse than the MLP community, Steven Universe, Rick and Morty, Loud House, Gravity Falls and they seem to be much worse than what the MLP community used to be.
 
Compared to those communities they make the MLP community look more tame.

I had two different therapists. The first gave zero input and just wanted to sit and listen to what I had done through my life “because it was fascinating”.
 
The second instantly was convinced I was molested by my father (before I even said anything) UNTIL he learned that my father had a job at Disneyland, at which point he was convinced my father couldn’t possible have done such a thing.
 
Therapists are hacks who get paid a stupidly large sum of money to do nothing, and I’m sure as heck not going to see one over a TV show.

I didn’t say that, though I can see where it can be misinterpreted. By watching the show from season 2 onwards, Spike is treated as a gofer by her most of the time and often, the best between them is “I’m annoyed by him”. There are some moments that are nice between them, but generally comes from SPIKE doing the nice thing and twilight thanking him. Spike’s buttmoney status is often used by having Twilight being preoccupied with [thing] and then Spike tries to interact with her and then is brushed off or griped at and it’s a crying shame.

Especially in the context. Twilight has had no qualms about treating Spike like dirt or otherwise an afterthought, often being little more than annoyed with him when he’s not at her beck and call. Him giving a quip about possibly having “some real family” and having that be some sort of heartbreak? It’s laughable.

Josh just continued to prove he never paid any attention to any of the foundation episodes. He also didn’t even pay attention to his own written episodes if the continuity between molt down and father knows beast is anything to go by.

Which was kind of a waste and while I don’t care for Merriwether Williams writing that since most of her writing comes off as mean spirited and force (though admittedly she wrote good episodes i.e. “Bats!”) I felt that getting rid of Peewee was a missed opportunity to give Spike a pet and companion of his own but we get syay tier episodes like “Just for Sidekicks” as an attempt justify that Spike irresponsible with pets which is false and some could argue that he was having a hard time dealing with Angel in “Dragonshy” but it’s Angel as he’s often portrayed as a spoiled brat.
 
While I find returning Peewee was quite noble of Spike, his reasons for returning makes little to no sense as Spike claimed that “phoenixes aren’t meant to be domesticated”, well last time I check neither are owls (Owlowiscious) or baby alligators (Gummy), and if that still doesn’t explained why Celestia has one of they really aren’t meant to be kept as pets, assuming Josh never saw a Bird in a Hoof either.
