The.ship.was.never a thing.
I hate sparity with passion, which is why I have major respect for the writers and directors.
They dont.like romance between the main characters
And in glad Spike is no longer googly eyed over Rarity, so even if he still has a crush, he matured in it.

The way you describe it, it almost sounds like polyamory.
Spike becomes close friends with Gabby the Griffon and because he enjoys the time he is spending with her, has “no time” to be at Rarity’s beck and call anymore. Rarity loses her marbles harshly as she realizes that she took his affections for her for granted and tries to miserably “win him back.” The end is Spike agreeing to split his time with both Rarity and Gabby.
So anyone saying this ship is “dead” is talking out of an orifice that is now their mouth.
