As a rough rule of thumb, the more ornamental and ostensible the uniform, the less effective the army is at anything besides keeping appearance. This is about the level of overdesigned-ness that the royal pony guards need to represent their actual uselessness.

Generally you want some kind of protection plate for the crotch for combat, or at the very least something so your tightly-pressed package can’t be seen by passersby.
