It would mean the show has bad writers.

No, they aren’t wrong. Lyra and Bon Bon being together started entirely as a fandom thing and remains (despite occasional teases by the show runners aside) an unconfirmed fandom thing. The same goes for Equestria Girl’s Applejack and Rarity. The director in charge specifically pointed out that, despite shipping it herself and the team pushing that angle a bit for fun, the relationship between them was left open to either interpretation by the fans.
 
This is the only female pairing that’s appeared on the show where someone working on it has come out and said that yes, they are absolutely a couple.

Clearly talking about just FiM.
 
But they’re still wrong. They’re the 4th lesbian couple.
